March Speaker - Assistant United States Attorney Craig Missakian (Alpha Upsilon, ‘83)

The San Diego Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter is pleased to announce our speaker for the March 2009 alumni lunch is Assistant United States Attorney Craig Missakian (Alpha Upsilon, ‘83).

Craig Missakian - Assistant United States Attorney Craig was a Sig at USC where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in political science. From there he went to the Georgetown Law School where he was an editor of the American Criminal Law Review and graduated in 1986. After working in the private sector for several years, he joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office where he worked as a state prosecutor handling a wide variety of cases, including narcotics offenses, domestic violence, and juvenile murder.

In 2000, Craig made what turned out to be an unsuccessful run for a seat in the California State Legislature seeking to represent California’s 43nd Assembly District, which covers the Glendale/Burbank areas.

Since 2001, Craig has worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California. His experience there has included national security and terrorism matters, public corruption prosecutions, and most recently cyber and intellectual property crimes.

In 2007, Craig filed a first of its kind prosecution under the Stolen Valor Act, prosecuting a member of the Pomona Valley Water District Board for falsely claiming to have won the Congressional Medal of Honor. In 2008, for his work on the Chi Mak espionage case he was awarded the U.S. Department of Justice Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service, one of the department’s highest honors. The Chi Mak prosecution was a lengthy 2-month trial that culminated in guilty verdicts or pleas for all six defendants and a 24-year sentence for the lead defendant. Lou Dobbs from CNN described the case as the most significant espionage prosecution in a generation. Craig currently lives in the Los Angeles area.
