Alumni Lunch - March 2020 | Significant Sig Mark Neville

Join us for lunch this month to hear from Significant Sig Mark Neville as he shares about his life changing experience after giving the gift of life to a family friend. In March of 2019, Mark donated one of his kidneys to Tasha Herrera, his family's former nanny.

It was Neville's second time as a donor to someone with a terminal illness. Fifteen years ago, he donated bone marrow to a young boy he had never met. Neville, the father of three, has since become close friends with the child's family and visits them in Huntington Beach.

"It would be really helpful to a lot of people if they knew they could make a difference by donating a kidney," said Neville. "The inconvenience of it is insignificant compared to the changes it can make in someone's life. If even one more person does this, there is one less person on the waiting list. ... I really feel lucky that I get to do this."

The statistics are daunting. In the United States, 94,780 patients currently await kidney transplants. Last year, there were a total of 21,167 kidney transplants — 14,725 of the kidneys were from deceased donors and 6,442 from living donors, said Anne Paschke of the United Network for Organ Sharing.

The sad fact is that 4,189 patients died in 2018 waiting for a kidney. They could be alive today if more healthy people had agreed to donate one of their two kidneys. Doctors say people can do just fine with one. Donors continue living their lives as usual.
