ΣΧ Alumni Lunch - September 2026 | Fred Shatsky - USS Midway Museum

Join us for lunch Friday, September 11, at 11:45am at Sigma Chi-owned Miguel's-Old Town.

Our speaker, Fred Shatsky of the USS Midway Museum Speakers Bureau, will present Operation Frequent Wind, the U.S. Navy Task Force 76 evacuation of Saigon in April 1975 and the largest helicopter evacuation in U.S. military history.

As the city fell, Midway had already sent most of its air wing ashore to make room for Air Force H-53 helicopters. Over roughly 30 hours, it became the first stop to freedom for more than 3,000 evacuees, in one of the largest humanitarian rescues ever carried out. The crew pushed helicopters over the side to keep the flight deck clear. At the height of it, a South Vietnamese pilot landed a two-seat Bird Dog observation plane on the carrier with his wife and five children crammed inside. Today, Midway sits just a few miles from Miguel's on the San Diego waterfront.
