Giving Back Through Sigma Chi

The San Diego Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter believes that brotherhood does not end at graduation. One of the most meaningful ways alumni can continue to support Sigma Chi is by investing in the next generation of brothers through scholarships, leadership development, and educational opportunities.

For many alumni, philanthropy is not simply about giving money. It is about preserving the values of Sigma Chi, strengthening undergraduate chapters, and ensuring that future brothers have access to the same — and even greater — opportunities than those who came before them.

Through our chapter’s support of the Sigma Chi Foundation, we help turn local alumni engagement into long-term investment in Sigma Chi’s future.

Our Chapter’s Annual Commitment

The San Diego Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter makes a minimum annual contribution of $1,000 to the Sigma Chi Foundation. This gift is funded through chapter dues and philanthropic fundraising activities, reflecting our chapter’s commitment to supporting scholarships, leadership development, and educational opportunities for Sigma Chi brothers.

Every dues-paying member and every brother who participates in chapter fundraising helps make this commitment possible. By making this recurring annual contribution, the chapter helps ensure that alumni support is not limited to fellowship among graduates, but also extends to the development of undergraduate brothers and future Sigma Chi leaders.

This annual gift is one of the ways our alumni chapter lives out lifelong brotherhood: by supporting the brothers of today while helping prepare the brothers of tomorrow.

The Sigma Chi Foundation

Established by alumni brothers and independent of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Sigma Chi Foundation invests in Sigma Chi members, chapters, and future leaders through scholarships, leadership development, educational grants, and long-term financial support.

The Foundation grew out of a belief that Sigma Chi needed more than short-term support. It needed enduring investment. What began as an effort to establish an endowment fund has grown into one of the most successful Greek-letter foundations in North America.

Since the launch of Sigma Chi’s leadership programming in 1999, the Foundation’s impact has expanded far beyond its original mission. Today, the Foundation supports undergraduate and graduate scholarships, leadership development programs, educational initiatives, and chapter-based opportunities that help brothers grow personally, professionally, and academically.

The Foundation has supported thousands of members through scholarships and has invested tens of millions of dollars in leadership programming, educational grants, and long-term support for Sigma Chi chapters and members.

Giving to the Foundation Is Giving Back to Sigma Chi

The Sigma Chi Foundation is the primary philanthropic vehicle for alumni who want to support Sigma Chi. Giving to the Foundation does not mean a chapter loses support. In many cases, it means the chapter and its undergraduate brothers gain access to more resources, greater stability, and more opportunity than could be achieved through short-term fundraising alone.

Foundation giving helps transform individual generosity into structured, professionally managed support. Gifts can help fund scholarships, leadership programs, educational spaces, chapter-based initiatives, and endowed funds that continue supporting Sigma Chi year after year.

Why Foundation Giving Matters

It Creates Permanent Support, Not One-Time Fixes

Direct fundraising can help address immediate needs, but Foundation-supported giving can create lasting impact. When gifts are directed toward endowed or long-term funds, they can support scholarships, leadership development, and educational opportunities in perpetuity.

This allows alumni support to continue benefiting brothers long after the original gift is made.

It Unlocks Scholarships and Leadership Development

Foundation dollars directly support undergraduate and graduate scholarships, leadership development opportunities, educational programming, and initiatives that strengthen Sigma Chi chapters and members.

Programs such as the Krach Transformational Leaders Workshop and the Horizons Huntsman Leadership Summit help undergraduates build practical leadership skills they can use in their chapters, careers, families, and communities.

These investments reduce financial pressure on undergraduates while strengthening their personal and professional development.

It Protects Donors and Chapters

The Sigma Chi Foundation is a tax-exempt, professionally managed organization. This helps ensure that gifts are stewarded responsibly, donations are handled appropriately, and donors have confidence that their contributions are being used as intended.

For alumni chapters, working through the Foundation provides important structure and oversight. It allows alumni to support charitable and educational purposes without placing unnecessary administrative or tax burdens on the chapter itself.

How the Alumni Chapter Supports the Foundation

The San Diego Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter supports the Sigma Chi Foundation through annual giving, alumni education, and philanthropic fundraising activities.

As a chapter, we make a minimum annual contribution of $1,000 to the Foundation from funds raised through dues and chapter-supported philanthropy. We also help brothers understand the Foundation’s role in supporting scholarships, leadership development, educational programming, and long-term investment in Sigma Chi’s future.

Our support may include:

  • Making a minimum annual chapter contribution to the Sigma Chi Foundation
  • Using chapter dues and philanthropic fundraising activities to support Foundation giving
  • Sharing information about Foundation giving opportunities
  • Encouraging alumni to support scholarships and leadership programs
  • Promoting long-term support for undergraduate brothers
  • Helping brothers understand the impact of Foundation-funded programs
  • Connecting interested alumni with appropriate Foundation resources

When alumni chapters and the Foundation work together, the result is stronger support for undergraduates, greater confidence for donors, and a more sustainable future for Sigma Chi.

The Thomas Cowan Bell Chapter Challenge

The Thomas Cowan Bell Chapter Challenge gives alumni a way to help endow a chapter’s future. Through the Bell Chapter Challenge, alumni can support long-term funding for scholarships, leadership development, and chapter-based educational initiatives.

Once a Bell Chapter fund reaches the required level, it becomes endowed, meaning it can provide support in perpetuity. This helps move alumni giving beyond short-term needs and toward lasting support for future generations of brothers.

For alumni who want to make a long-term impact, the Bell Chapter Challenge provides a meaningful pathway to support Sigma Chi’s future through permanent, Foundation-managed giving.

Examples of Foundation Impact

Scholarship Support

Foundation-supported scholarships help reduce financial pressure on undergraduate and graduate brothers. These scholarships reward academic achievement, encourage continued engagement, and help brothers pursue educational opportunities that may otherwise be more difficult to access.

Leadership Development

Leadership programs funded through the Foundation help brothers develop the skills, confidence, and character needed to lead in their chapters and beyond. These programs are not simply about holding an office; they are about preparing brothers to lead with integrity throughout their lives.

Educational Spaces and Chapter Support

Foundation-supported educational funds can also help chapters plan for the future. Rather than reacting only when a need arises, alumni can help create structured support for educational spaces, learning environments, and long-term chapter stability.

Investing in the Next Generation

Undergraduates are not expected to fundraise for the Foundation, but they should understand why it exists. As alumni, the way we talk about giving shapes how younger brothers will think about Sigma Chi for the rest of their lives.

When undergraduates see that alumni believe in their future, support their leadership development, and invest in opportunities for them to grow, they are more likely to carry that same spirit of generosity forward after graduation.

Our chapter’s support of the Foundation is one way we demonstrate that Sigma Chi is not only a college experience. It is a lifelong commitment to friendship, justice, learning, leadership, and service.

Other Philanthropic Efforts

While the Sigma Chi Foundation is the chapter’s primary philanthropic focus within Sigma Chi, alumni may also choose to support charitable causes in the broader community.

When doing so, it is important that charitable giving be handled properly. Alumni chapters are generally organized for the social benefit of their members, not as charitable fundraising organizations. For that reason, the cleanest approach is usually to encourage brothers to give directly to a qualified nonprofit organization or to partner with an established charitable organization that can properly receive and receipt donations.

Appropriate approaches may include:

  • Encouraging brothers to give individually to a charitable organization
  • Partnering with an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit that can receive and receipt donations directly
  • Organizing events where proceeds go directly to a named charitable partner
  • Using the chapter to coordinate awareness and participation rather than acting as the financial intermediary

Whatever approach is used, transparency is important. Brothers should understand how funds are collected, who receives them, who benefits, and how the effort aligns with the chapter’s purpose and structure.

A Lasting Expression of Brotherhood

Philanthropy is one of the clearest ways alumni can leave Sigma Chi better than they found it. Through support of the Sigma Chi Foundation, alumni can help fund scholarships, leadership development, educational opportunities, and long-term resources that benefit brothers today and for generations to come.

The San Diego Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter is proud to support that mission through a minimum annual contribution of $1,000, funded by dues and philanthropic fundraising activities.

For brothers who are interested in making a lasting impact, supporting the Sigma Chi Foundation is one of the most effective ways to give back to Sigma Chi.
